What is Hyperbaric Therapy and What Are Its Benefits?
What is Hyperbaric Therapy? What is Hyperbaric Therapy and What Are Its Benefits? With the advancement of science and technology, there are now many medical services available to speed up the healing process for patients. One of these is Hyperbaric Therapy, which combines the use of 100% oxygen with a pressure above 1 Absolute Atmosphere in a Hyperbaric Chamber.
Initially, hyperbaric therapy was used to treat diving accident patients with decompression illness, where symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, and shortness of breath. This condition arises when the body experiences rapid changes in water or air pressure, causing nitrogen in the blood to form bubbles that block blood flow and the nervous system, which can, of course, lead to serious conditions or even death.
Over time, and through various trials, Hyperbaric Therapy has proven effective in helping to heal several diseases, particularly those related to the restructuring of damaged cells. Given the wide applicability of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in treating various diseases and the number of patients who need it, this treatment service certainly cannot be ignored. Therefore, to meet the needs of the community, especially in the Bali region, which is often visited by divers from various regions and countries, Kasih Ibu Hospital Saba now offers HBOT or Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy services.
How Does HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) Work?
Hyperbaric therapy chambers contain high levels of pure oxygen; therefore, items such as lighters or battery-powered devices are strictly avoided in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy room. Once it is ensured that the patient is not carrying any fire-sensitive items or tools, they are then placed in a room with air pressure two to three times higher than normal atmospheric pressure, and given pure oxygen (100%) to breathe for one to two hours.
Due to the high pressure in the room, some patients may feel uncomfortable when inside. Some may experience pain or sensations in their ears. After the therapy is completed, patients usually feel very tired, lightheaded, and hungry. The therapy itself can be done in either a sitting or standing position.
